Do You Let Other People’s Expectations and Judgements Influence…
Do You Let Other People’s Expectations and Judgements Influence or Control Your Life?
How many of us lose a part of ourselves over time, either not realizing it, being in denial, or making the choice to allow it to happen because it was seemingly easier to go with the flow, or to appease a spouse or a parent or someone in our lives.
I went to see the Broadway touring show of Funny Girl recently, and so many feelings came to the surface, including the feeling of my younger self rumbling beneath. She was feeling a bit overlooked, and I also saw a part of myself in Fanny Brice; perhaps a part of me that has been ignored at times over the years. It was an emotional day.
Why are so many of us willing to give up our passions, our preferences, our dreams?? And why are we so afraid to ask for what we need and want?
In this episode I share a very personal story with you in hopes that if you can relate, perhaps it will help you take some kind of action on your path to finding peace in your heart, your mind and soul so that you can live life the way you wish to live it. No matter your age.
Not be missed take-ways…
—Whether it’s a spouse, partner, family member or friend; bottom line, if you can’t be who you authentically are, if you can’t express your wants, needs and desires with them for whatever reason, and feel safe in doing so, then that is too great a sacrifice. Full stop.
—Life is not a f*cking dress rehearsal. Daring to live a life we choose to live can be scary as f*ck. And you can do this.
—Remember that the #1 regret of the dying is not about what they did, but what they did not do.
—When you live on your path not worrying about external approval you begin attracting others in your life who welcome and want you to be you, and love you because of who you are, not despite who you are. People will appear out of nowhere who will listen, respect, admire and appreciate all that is you.
—Your desires matter. Don’t live the rest of your life settling because it’s comfortable. No matter what damn age you are, it’s never too late to live a fulfilling life asking for what you want..and getting it.
—Don’t we all deserve that? My wish for all who need to hear this, is to have the courage to live a life you dream of living. Even, and especially in later life. Life is short and getting shorter. Set the example for your kids and grandkids that it’s not only ok, but necessary to be true to yourself.
And your mission, that I hope you’ll choose to accept…
It’s time to be honest with yourself. Are you in a situation of any kind where you’re miserable? Or let’s say you’re not miserable but just ‘comfortable’ in the mundane, tolerating mediocrity, a lack of passion, or missing what used to light you up?
If this hits home at all, ask yourself what you wish were different. If you mean it, most often to make a real change…not just a using bandaid for a temporary fix…we need support from either a counselor, coach or therapist. You are a priority. Ask for what you need. You’ve got this.
Thank you so much for listening! And until the next time, live passionately, vulnerably, and keep loving later life!
